Tijdens de Grote Titanenoorlog heeft een ras van reuzen genaamd Titans de mensheid bijna uitgeroeid. De overlevenden bouwden drie concentrische muren die hoog genoeg waren om de Titanen buiten te houden, maar een eeuw na dat tijdperk van vrede verscheen plotseling de Kolossale Titan en schopte een gat door de Buitenmuur, waardoor andere Titanen erdoorheen konden stromen. De mensheid wordt gedwongen zich terug te trekken achter de Middenmuur en begint haar vergeldingsmaatregelen te plannen.
